Keep All High Schools in Santa Rosa Open!

Santa Rosa City Schools have a budget deficit of $20+ million. The Board of Education has determined to close one high school, one middle and three elementary schools to stay afloat. The School Closing/Consolidation Advisory Committee will come up with the recommendation which high school to close in the 1/27 meeting.

Here are several ways you can help keep All high schools open.

  1. Sign the petition https://chng.it/2Qh5bpRDTd
  2. Send Advocacy emails (1) to Keep All High Schools Open, (2) Exclude Omar Medina from All Board Meetings whenever any high school is on the topic of discussion. Email templates and directions can be found below.

Subject: Be Creative and Keep All High Schools Open

Dear Trustees and Elected Officers,

Due to a budget deficit, Santa Rosa City Schools is proposing to close one of five high schools in the school district (in addition to 1 middle school site and 3 elementary school sites). While any school closures can have significant effects, high school closures tend to have a longer term and deeper impact on academic achievement, social and mental development, and future opportunities due to the age of the students and the complexity of their educational needs.

Each of our 5 high schools are an integral part of the community and serve the unique needs of all Santa Rosa students. We encourage the SRCS Board to evaluate alternative scenarios to close the budget gap which would not require closure of ANY Santa Rosa high school site.

Disruption to Academic Progress:

High school students may experience disruptions in their academic continuity as they transition to new schools. Different curricula or teaching styles at the new schools may further hinder students' ability to keep pace with their education. Older students may have more established academic paths, and transferring to another high school may disrupt this progression. If the new school doesn’t offer the same programs or resources, students may face a disadvantage.

Social development and Mental Health:

High school students are teenagers and often have strong emotional ties to their school community. The closure may cause anxiety and stress among students and their families. The loss of familiar environments, friends, and teachers may lead to feelings of isolation and uncertainty, impacting students' mental health and overall well-being at a critical time in their development.

Impact on Extracurricular Activities:

Many extracurricular programs, clubs, and sports may be reduced or eliminated due to the closure. This loss can deprive students of opportunities for personal growth, teamwork, and community involvement, which are vital for a well-rounded education.

Impact on College and Career Preparation:

Santa Rosa is home to the Engineering Academy, where students engage in project-based learning focused on STEM education. Students may lose access to specialized programs that prepare them for college and careers, such as Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB) classes, vocational training, or internships. This lack of preparation can affect their readiness for post-secondary education and future job prospects.

Santa Rosa’s current high school students have already endured significant learning setbacks due to the wildfires and the pandemic. They vividly remember being evacuated from their homes and attending Zoom classes during their elementary and middle school years. Closing a high school is not just about shutting doors; it would disrupt our community, limit access to specialized educational opportunities, and jeopardize the future of our city's children and their potential. It is vital that the school district carefully consider these impacts before making any final decisions.

Be creative! Keep All High Schools Open!

Subject: Exclude Omar Medina from Board Meetings on School Closing/Consolidation

Dear Trustees and Elected Officers,

Due to the fact that Trustee Medina received a salary from EAHS Foundation, he has major conflict of interests in board discussions on closing and/or consolidation of any high schools within the SRCS jurisdiction.

It is imaginable that all BOE meetings on closing and consolidation will involve at least one high school.

I therefore strongly request that Trustee Medina be excluded from ANY and ALL Board of Education meetings/discussions, effective immediately, when school closing and/or consolidation is on the agenda.
